I think there are two reasons why poodles continue to be loved.

2. History

Poodle is a typical French dog, but historically it originated in Russia or northern Central Asia. Initially, poodles were hunting ducks as a water hunting dog. In the 17th century, small Toy Poodles became popular among the French upper class. It is recorded that it was a popular dog among the upper class in England in the 18th century.

In Japan in recent years, Toy Poodles are expanding their fields of activity, such as being active as an animal therapy dog that visits hospitals because it is difficult for hair to fall out, and being adopted as a part-time police dog.

3. Differences in pet needs between Japan and overseas

Did you know that there is a difference between the popularity of Japanese pets and the popularity of American pets?

In Japan’s dog ranking, Poodle has been number one for 12 consecutive years. Chihuahua is second and Dachshund is third.

As you can see, small dogs are popular in Japan.

On the other hand, in the American’s dog ranking, Labrador Retriever ranked first for 26 consecutive years.

The second place is German Shepherd. Third place is the Golden Retriever. As you can see, large dogs are popular in the United States.

There have been major differences between the popular breeds of dogs in Japan and the United States, but some breeds do not change. The point is that pets can bring happiness.　

Keeping a pet is hard, but you can get even more happiness. Recent research has revealed that the reason is “oxytocin,” which is one of the “happiness hormones.” Oxytocin is a hormone that is secreted a lot when a mother gives birth and when breastfeeding a child, and attachment between people is important. In other words, the more you love your pet, the more happy you feel.
